"Human task prompts for user credentials when accessed via WAN"

If I use the jbpm-console to access a user task list from a machine inside our LAN I only need to enter my user credentials once at login.
However, if I do the same thing via a machine accessing the server from outside the LAN (i.e across a WAN) I enter my credentials at login time (as expected) but when I either start a new task or complete a user action on an existing task I am prompted for my login credentials once again.
Can anyone tell me what step I've missed? Presumably I need to set up an authentication mapping for the Human Task service (or something!).
(I'm sure I've seem another post on this topic but can't refind it.)
Thanks
